Outdoor Activities on Lake Maurepas

Let’s explore some of the outdoor activities you’ll find during your time at Lake Maurepas:

Fishing

It’s not hard to see why Lake Maurepas is a fisherman’s dream. Loaded with catfish, crappie, bass and bream, you’ll be reeling in great catches for hours to come. We recommend going on your trips early in the morning, especially during the spring and fall when the fish are most active.

Boating and Kayaking

The best part of Lake Maurepas is how open it is. It connects to several rivers and bayous, making it the ideal spot for boating and paddling. If you enjoy kayaking, you can set out on smaller channels like the Pass Manchac or Blind River. These waterways wind through cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, creating the ever-so-desirable Louisiana swamp effect.

Wildlife Watching

The swamplands bring a variety of critters, largely herons, eagles, and the occasional alligator. Birdwatchers will love the area, especially during migration season, because the wetlands come to life!

Exploring the Surrounding Area

There’s plenty to do around Lake Maurepas, including:

Manchac Swamp

The nearby Manchac Swamp is a famous wetland in the region. You can book a guided tour to learn more about the ecosystem, or hear the ghost stories that linger from the villages’ mysterious past. Plus, the Manchac Swamp bridge is nearby, one of the longest bridges in the world over water. It’s worth the drive across!

Tickfaw State Park

Just a short drive up north, Tickfaw State Park provides all the essentials for a good time: hiking trails, boardwalks through the swamp, and a nature center to learn more about the unique wildlife of Louisiana.

Ponchatoula and Hammond, Louisiana

Your trip wouldn’t be complete without visiting the “Strawberry Capitol of the World” in Ponchatoula! It’s a great stop for antique shopping and, of course, strawberry harvests. That’s not all. The neighboring city of Hammond has a lively downtown filled with delicious restaurants, breweries, and live music venues. It’s the perfect place to wind down after a day outdoors.

Best Times of Year to Visit

The weather in Southern Louisiana can often be humid and unpredictable, so timing your next vacation will be vital.

  • Spring (March - May): This time of year is comfortable temperature-wise and excellent for fishing. Wildflowers and cypress trees are blooming, making a colorful landscape.
  • Fall (September - November): The weather is cooler, there are fewer mosquitoes (thank goodness), and overall, great conditions for boating and kayaking.
  • Summer (June - August): Gear up for some high humidity, afternoon storms, and plenty of insect repellent. However, it’s some of the best times for water sports.
  • Winter (December - February): Fewer crowds and milder weather make winter in Southern Louisiana underrated.

Regardless of when you visit, you’ll always find something to do in our neck of the woods!

  • Bug spray, bug spray, and more bug spray: Mosquitos and gnats are common near the swamps and water.
  • Check the weather: The lake is connected to tidal waterways, so wind can create rather choppy conditions.
  • Contact a local guide: Whether you’re fishing, going on a swamp tour, or birding, a guide gives you incredible insider knowledge of the area.
  • Pack smart: Sunscreen, water, and comfortable shoes make your experience that much better here.
